ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate seed physiological quality and initial pea (Pisum sativum) seedling development at different water and salt potentials. Polyethylene glycol 6000, sodium chloride and potassium chloride solutions with different osmotic potentials (0; -0.2; -0.4; -0.6; -0.8; -1.0, and -1.2 MPa) were used, and the experiment had a 3 × 7 factorial arrangement. The physiological quality and initial seedling growth characteristics (first germination count, final germination count, strong normal seedlings, epicotyl and taproot lengths, epicotyl dry matter, and root dry matter) were evaluated in a completely randomized experimental design, with four repetitions. ABSTRACT The study of the water energetic status under saline condition and its impact on the development of cowpea is of extreme importance, since this crop is the food base in many parts of the world. An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse from March to May 2014 using the cultivar IPA 206 in Fluvisol collected in the municipality of Pesqueira, PE, Brazil. Waters with six levels of electrical conductivity (0; 2.5; 5; 7.5; 10; 12.5 dS m-1) formulated with NaCl and a salt mixture were used. ABSTRACT Investigations into water potentials in the soil-plant system are of great relevance in environments with abiotic stresses, such as salinity and drought. An experiment was developed using bell pepper in a Neossolo Flúvico (Fluvent) irrigated with water of six levels of electrical conductivity (0, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 dS m-1) by using exclusively NaCl and by simulating the actual condition (using a mixture of salts). The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, in a 6 × 2 factorial arrangement, with four replicates. Lesser celandine (Ranunculaceae) is a perennial weed with tuberous root. Tubers are the most important means of reproduction and dispersion of this weed. In recent years, it has spread into wheat fields in Western Iran, mainly in the Lorestan province. A series of experiments were conducted to determine cardinal temperatures and to study the effects of pre-chilling, temperature fluctuations, tuber size, freezing and drying on germination of the tubers, as well as the effect of planting depth on sprouting of the tubers. The results obtained showed that the highest percentage of germination occurred when tubers were stored for more than 2 weeks at 4 or 8 ºC. ABSTRACT Combretum leprosum Mart., commonly known as ‘mofumbo’, is used for medicinal purposes, recovery of degraded areas and apiculture. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of water stress on the germination and vigor of C. leprosum seeds as function of different temperatures. To compose the treatments, the substrate used was paper roll moistened with polyethylene glycol solutions (PEG 6000), at the following levels of osmotic potential: 0.0; -0.1; -0.2; -0.2; -0.4; and -0.5 MPa, and placed in chamber at constant temperatures of 25, 30 and 35 and alternating temperature of 20-30 °C, forming a 6 x 4 factorial.
